Jesus You Are

by Judith Whitehead

I will lift up my eyes to the hills-where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.
Psalm 121:1-2, NIV

One morning, fairly recently, I set off for a walk with the dog on a glorious sunny spring morning. I was feeling fine when I set off, enjoying the scenery, looking up to the hills in the distance and the beautiful blue sky, but then my mood changed quite quickly as I then began to dwell on some things that were really bothering me.

Before long I was in tears, yet thankful there were not many people about to see me crying or to ask the ‘dreaded’ question, “Are you okay?” (which nearly always results in a dishonest answer, to save embarrassment, “I’m fine thanks”). After about ten minutes, and still feeling very distressed I began talking to Jesus and reflecting on His goodness and all His other wonderful attributes.

My talk with Jesus went something like this: “Jesus You are my helper. Jesus You are my light and my salvation. Jesus you are my refuge, and my strong tower. Jesus You are the light of the world. Jesus You are the way, the truth and the life. Jesus You are everything I need. Jesus You are my Lord and Saviour, and my ever-present help in time of trouble. Jesus You are my comforter”. For about ten minutes I continued to declare the truth of who Jesus is and what He means to me.

I can truthfully say that by the time I arrived home again a short while later I felt transformed and at peace, and very much uplifted and strengthened by His love for me. I felt absolutely fine for the rest of the day.

I`m not advocating this as a sort of ‘magic bullet’ to use to solve problems, but as we choose, by an act of our will, to lift our thoughts away from our troubles and cares, our worries and anxieties, the Lord sees our trust in Him, and He delights to bring help and comfort into any situation.

Prayer: Father God, I admit I do not always turn to You for help as quickly as I ought, even though I know You are always with me and You hold me in the palm of Your hand. You have promised to never leave me, nor forsake me. Help me to hold on to all Your promises, no matter how I am feeling. Amen.
