Don’t Throw the Baby Out with the Bath Water!

by Ruth Hawkey

But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.”
Luke‬ ‭2:19,NIV

Speaking to a young friend recently, who is reconsidering her Christian faith, I found myself repeating to her the well-known phrase: “Make sure you don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.”

According to Wikipedia, ‘some claim that the phrase originates from a time when the whole household shared the same bath water. The head of the household (Lord) would bathe first, followed by the men, then the Lady and the women, then the children, followed lastly by the baby. The water would be so black from dirt that a baby could be accidentally “tossed out with the bathwater.” However, others state there is no historical evidence that there is any connection with the practice of several family members using the same bath water, the baby being bathed last.’

However, the point is that sometimes we can throw out some very important truths along with the surrounding things which aren’t really important at all, truths which we really need to treasure and hold on to, as Mary the mother of Jesus did. We must hold on to truths such as: the Lordship of Jesus, His death and resurrection, His love for His people and the power of His Holy Spirit. Such truths have stood the test of time.

Prayer: Heavenly Father please help us to discern the difference between what is important and needs to be valued and held onto and what can be disposed of in Jesus name we pray. Amen.
