Seeds of the Kingdom

Deep calls to Deep

by Pam Smith

Deep calls to deep at the sound of Thy waterfalls; All Thy breakers and Thy waves have rolled over me.
Psalm 42:7, NAS

Deep down David knew that God would turn His face towards him and give him the help and strength he longed for. He says ‘Even in the day time when I feel crushed by my troubles God will command his loving kindness to surround me and give me a song of praise to sing in the night’ (Psalm 42:8).

When David longs for God he remembers the times when His presence was so strong, and it filled him with joy and worship. Something deep in God’s Spirit called to David’s own spirit and they connected.

So it can be with us - when we’re driven into the arms of Jesus because there’s nowhere else to go, and what’s coming against us feels unbearable. It’s then that God’s Holy Spirit draws, calls, comforts and envisions us, deep in our spirits, bringing a deep river of healing from the throne of God into us, His children.

The deer has to stop running to drink, and so do we. We can then receive from God, and He can receive from us. When we answer the call of the Holy Spirit and come to that place something changes in us. And when God changes us something of His love flows out to the lives of others too.

David’s despair changes to hope in God’s presence, and hope changes to certainty as he responds to the deep call of God. He says 'Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him, the help of my countenance and my God' (Psalm 42:11), and hope often does show on the faces of those who have been in God’s presence.

Prayer: Breathe on me breath of God,
‘Till I am wholly Thine,
Until this earthly part of me
Glows with Thy fire divine.
