Chariots of Fire

by Pam Smith

Then Elisha prayed, and said, “Lord, I pray Thee, open his eyes that he may see.” So the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw; and behold the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.
2 Kings 6:17, RSV

Sometimes the trials seem to loom very large. Problems can be magnified and very much ‘in your face’ so that nothing else can be seen but the problem. The enemy commander is not Ben Hadad, as in Elisha’s story, but Satan. The spears and darts come in the form of temptations and trials.

At these times, does faith shrink as troubles appear as giants? No! My power and strength is small, yet my God is so great. Jesus comes saying, ‘Don’t be afraid because I am with you’. He is the mighty Rock of safety and protection. We can run to Him.

O that we could know and see, like Elisha, when troubles are stacked up against us, the Host of heavens armies is on our side, and the Captain of the Host is Jesus (Joshua 5:14).
As we yield to Him, He can command His chariots to rescue us from the attack, entrapment or deception of the enemy.

The Scriptures tells of the people who trusted God that won battles and overthrew kingdoms. He gives me the skill in war and strength to bend a bow of bronze, ‘For though we live in the world we are not carrying on a worldly war, for the weapons of our warfare are not worldly but have divine power to destroy strongholds’ (2 Corinthians 10:4).

We are not defenceless. May we be able to see the power available to us and understand how to use it. Let us put on the armour God has given us. There is more to our universe than the things we can see with our physical eyes.

We can be over comers. We can live pure lives. We can be fearless witnesses. We can be a people filled with the love of Jesus.

Prayer: Lord, help me to fully yield to You and resist the enemy. Would You open my eyes to see Your power and glory and to know how to stay under Your loving protection, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
