Breaking News

For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise from the dead.
John 20:9, AKJV

We are all very familiar with newscasters on our TV screens and other devices bringing news of daily events from around the world to us hourly or as scheduled. However, when something out of the ordinary happens, say affecting the nation, or something which the broadcasters think we ought to know, then the words ‘Breaking News’ flash across our screens drawing our attention to whatever is happening. Such news is usually unexpected and can be either good or bad.

For the disciples, the events of the previous few days had been devastating. They had watched, perhaps in disbelief or maybe in shock or confusion, as the events that led to the crucifixion of Jesus unfolded. Now they were left bereft, and not owing what to do, the bible says they went home.

Today’s scripture reveals that they did not know the scripture that He must rise from the dead. But though they did not know it, in the plans and purposes of God, wonderful ‘Breaking News’ was already on the horizon on the third day. The same scripture reveals that Jesus must rise from the dead. The Risen Christ had already conquered death and the grave for mankind, for time, and for eternity. The following forty days were to be revelatory. A mixture of joy, revelation and exhilaration would juxtapose in their emotions, as they witnessed the fact that He was indeed alive, and alive forevermore. If they didn’t know it before, they knew it then, Jesus was no ordinary man. They had been walking with the Son of God. Once they saw Him, in a second, their gloom and doom vanished, as joy and hope for the future flooded their lives again.

Maybe you have been journeying through difficult circumstances of your own, the loss of a job, rejection, a health scare, and you’re wondering when the clouds will part and when the sun will shine again in your life. Know this, that the scripture reveals that to all who fear the Lord’s name, the Son of Righteousness has risen with healing in his wings (Malachi 4:2) and ‘Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved’ (Acts 2:21).

The breaking news each moment for each of us is that Jesus, our Lord and Saviour, is already standing on the threshold of our day and on the horizon of each of our circumstances, and as we call on His name, we will find that He is indeed, not only the hope of the world, but our personal hope. He has already risen in our circumstances and is waiting for our call.

So today you can banish the anxieties and negative thoughts that are trying to gain entrance to your mind. Don’t allow them to take root. Today, God can bring peace to your past, purpose to your present, and hope for your future.

Prayer: Thank You, Lord, that You are our hope, and our everlasting joy, despite our circumstances, and that we can call on the wonderful name of Jesus at any moment of the day or night. Lord Jesus, I need You every hour. Help me to keep focussed on You, no matter what may come my way. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
