Walking in the light of God’s presence.

by Margaret Silvester

Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you and walk in the light of Your presence.
Psalm 89:15, NIV

The holy light of God’s presence may be described as light that illuminates the hidden corners of the human heart and exposes its darkest secrets. It reaches the hidden places of the heart – deep places, which we may have hidden, even from ourselves. We may feel reluctant to own that such places could exist and yet the Bible contains prayers left for our example, where men and women of old have so longed to walk in the light of God’s presence and have prayed that He would search them and know their hearts.

One such prayer is Psalm 43:3; ‘Send forth your light and your truth, let them guide me; let them bring me to your holy mountain, to the place where you dwell’. I have a recording by Duncan Campbell, whom God used in the Hebridian Revival over half a century ago, preaching on this verse. He tells how his car broke down in a remote place in the Scottish Highlands during the war. The only light he had was from a searchlight, which intermittently shone into the bonnet of his car so that he could detect the fault. He likened this to the light of God, which searches the deepest places of the human heart in order to bring us closer to Himself. The Lord’s searchlight penetrates the human spirit exposing every hidden motive (Proverbs 20:27 NLB).

In Scripture light often symbolises well-being. Walking in the light of God’s presence has untold benefits for us day by day. Firstly, it will keep us in the truth. We live in a world of mixture, compromise and relativism and more than ever before we need to know the truth so that we can walk in God’s ways. Secondly, it dispels our fear because wherever we are His presence is with us and we will not lose our way. Thirdly, walking in the light of God’s presence ensures His blessing because it is the way of obedience. In Scripture obedience and blessing go hand in hand.

Have you asked God to send His light and His truth to search your heart?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, You know me better than I know myself. Help me to trust You with the areas of my life, which may at present be hidden from me. Amen.
