The Lord Will Arise Over You

by Pam Smith

For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and deep darkness the people; But the Lord will arise over you, and His glory will be seen upon you.
Isaiah 60.2, NKJV

It’s often in the darkest times that we find the Lord’s presence arising over us. As we look up and cry out to Him in a desperate situation, He hears the cry of our hearts and we find He’s there, even in times of being in the deepest darkness. It’s in this place that we see His Glory.

We hear His gentle words, maybe His rebuke, and experience His mercy, His anointing and comfort. Also we find His lifting up and strengthening, His wisdom and guidance, His forgiveness, and His feeding and covering. It’s all that we need from the Good Shepherd (as described in Psalm 23). All this brings His glory upon us, and others will see this as we respond and receive from Him.

The beautiful poetry in these verses, endorses the truth as line after line is repeated in a different way: ‘But the Lord will arise over you, and His glory will be seen upon you’ (Isaiah 60:2).

Indeed, when His glory has come upon us, we are able to ‘arise and shine’ to praise and worship His Name. 'The Redeemer will come to Zion, and to those who turn from transgression in Jacob,’ says the LORD (Isaiah 59:20). He’s still waiting today, to hear the sound of our cry. And He’s still waiting to hear His people say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord’. He will then return again.

So let those of us who have received Him, arise, for He’s our light, our righteousness and our glory. Let’s love, comfort and share with those who mourn in Zion, that they may find the fulfilment of those words, ‘You shall know that I the Lord, am your Saviour, and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob (Isaiah 60. 16). Let’s prepare ourselves as a bride prepares for her wedding day to love and please Him, and to walk in His presence daily.

Prayer: We thank You, Lord, for the many rich blessings that have come to us from Your people - for the Law, the Prophets, the Gospel and our Saviour. Come, Lord, and shine in any darkness that You see in my life. In His Name, Amen.
