Unique

O God Almighty, who is like You? You are mighty, O Lord, and Your faithfulness surrounds You.
Psalm 89:8, NIV

I love words, and I love researching the definition of words I don’t know the meaning of. I have also found that it really enriches my understanding of some scriptures when I understand the key words in a verse. Recently my son and I were discussing the word ‘unique’. He was telling me that this word shouldn’t be modified, because the word means ‘one of a kind, the only one, or unequalled’. Therefore, referring to something as being ‘more unique’ is incorrect and makes no sense. As I read the scripture in Psalm 89:8, I was reminded of our conversation,‘O God Almighty, who is like You? You are mighty, O Lord, and Your faithfulness surrounds You’.

The God of Heaven and earth – the God we love and serve – is unique in every way. He Himself declares that there is none like Him: “I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me” (Isaiah 46:9). God is truly unique.

I think it is important for us to remember that, and not try to fit God into our own understanding of who we understand Him to be. He is a holy God, the Creator of the ends of the earth, sovereign and answerable to no one. Job 23:13 says, ‘But He stands alone, and who can oppose Him? He does whatever He pleases’. The Amplified Bible puts it this way, ‘But He is unique and unchangeable, and who can turn Him? And what His soul desires, that He does’.

It is not surprising then that this unequalled, one-of-a-kind, unique God created each of us to also be unique, as we are created in His image. Most people know that their fingerprint is unique to them alone, but did you know that the ridges, bumps and shape of your outer ear is completely unique to you? The pattern of the iris in each of your eyes is unique to you. Your DNA, the way you walk, your voice, and even your tongue is unlike that of anyone else. God is not in the ‘copy-paste’ business. He creates originals, and His purpose for each one of us is designed to suit our unique plan and calling for our lives. How amazing that is!

What a privilege we have to belong to this magnificent God, the One who fashioned each of us individually to be one of a kind, the One who is like no other, and far above all! ‘Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; His greatness no one can fathom’. (Psalm 145:3).

Prayer: Lord, I echo the words of the psalmist, ‘Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; His greatness, no one can fathom!’ There is no one like You, Lord, in all the earth and I glorify Your name. Thank You, Lord, for creating me in Your likeness to be unique and with a unique purpose. Amen.
