Turn Around

by Lynda Scott

“She turned to leave and saw someone standing there. It was Jesus, but she didn't recognize him.”
John 20:14, NLT

Over the Easter period I was reading again the account of Jesus’ death and resurrection in the book of John. I got to the part where Mary Magdalene came to the tomb. When she couldn’t find Jesus she was devastated. She stood crying. She would have been feeling alone and filled with grief. Mary steps into the tomb where she sees two angels. Of all things to say, they ask her why she’s crying. They know Mary has no need to cry because Jesus has risen. But Mary, still not understanding, fumbles out her burden that she doesn’t know where Jesus is.

But it was the next line that really got my attention. Mary turns to leave and sees someone standing there. It was Jesus, but she didn’t recognise him. That’s when the Holy Spirit spoke to me. He said that at times we may feel so alone in our problems. Maybe we’re searching for Jesus to help us, but we can’t seem to find him. We can’t hear His voice. We’re nearly on the point of giving up. Often that’s when the tears of despair and confusion abound. But the Holy Spirit is saying “turn around!” Jesus is right there next to your shoulder, and He has been there all along. He’s not dead, but has risen. You haven’t recognised his nearness. But today He wants you to know that He is near. Turn around, see Him and let Him speak to you. And like the words he said to Mary he says to you “why are you crying?”

Prayer: Dear Jesus, I am so glad you are not dead, but have risen. Today I feel like I have lost sight of your nearness and I desperately need your help in the situation I am facing. Thank you that your Word tells me that You are near and very concerned for my distress. Help me to recognise You, hear You and see You. Thank you for being here with me at this time. In Your Name we pray, Amen.
