Seeds of the Kingdom

There is a God

by Dean Gardner

The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth ... made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, for ‘In him we live and move and have our being’.
Acts 17:24-28, ESV

In January 2009 adverts were placed on London buses, funded by atheists and humanists, declaring, ‘THERE’S PROBABLY NO GOD. NOW STOP WORRYING AND ENJOY YOUR LIFE.’ It struck me at the time that not only is atheism folly – God says in His Word, ‘the fool says in his heart, there is no God’ (Psalm 53:1), but it is also cruel.

I remember thinking, how will that statement on the side of the buses help someone who has been bereaved today, or has been told that they have a terminal illness, or that they no longer have a job to go to? Who can those people turn to in their despair if there is no God?

Ever since creation was broken and marred, when the first man and woman, Adam and Eve, turned their back on God in the Garden of Eden, there has been a searching in the heart of human beings to be connected again to the One who created them, and whose fingerprints they could see, even in the fallen world around them.

It takes stubborn unbelief to persistently reject the simple truth that, just as a beautiful painting has to have an artist, so the complex order and design of the universe has to have a creator and designer. The Apostle Paul spoke the words of our text today when addressing the Athenians, who had a multitude of gods, but still searched for that elusive One, the creator whom they could truly know.

Mankind seeks God, but, amazingly, God Himself came seeking us in the person of His Son Jesus Christ. Jesus, God become man, suffered a cruel death on a cross as a sacrifice for our sins. It was so we, by trusting in Him, could finally be reconciled to our loving Creator God and Heavenly Father, and spend eternity with Him when our lives end.

It may be that someone reading this Seed today hasn’t yet come to know God personally in their life. If that someone is you, He’s not far from you. He’s a prayer away, waiting to reveal Himself to you, if you will turn to Him with all your heart and surrender your life to Him. You could pray the prayer below to begin a relationship with Him.

Prayer: Heavenly Father. I want to truly know you. Thank you that you sent your Son Jesus to die on the cross to save me. Lord Jesus, thank you for loving me that much - please forgive all my sins and be my Lord and Saviour from today and always. I receive your gift of eternal life. Thank you! Amen.

He now lives in Norfolk with his wife Gemma. In 1988 he experienced God`s amazing grace at a carol service and began a journey of restoration and healing with Jesus. He longs to continue that journey allowing God`s truth to change his own life but also to share that truth with others that they too might know Jesus for themselves.
