Anchor for My Soul

Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls.
Hebrews 6:18b-19a, NLT

Yesterday we were near the sea and the water was higher than I have ever seen it here. The waves were crashing and spraying water up on to the road. In the harbour, the small boats were anchored. They were being tossed up and down and rocking from side to side, but they were each anchored in their place. While the stormy sea tossed them around in what seemed a dangerous way, still they remained anchored in place.

This is such a vivid picture of how our lives can be. We can feel like we are tossed around by the storms raging around us. If we are not anchored, we could easily be shipwrecked, crashing into other boats or into the shore.

As our verse for today says, if we run to Him (God) for our refuge, we don’t have to be afraid. We can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that goes before us. This hope in God is an anchor for our souls. It holds us firmly in place to ride out the storms that rage around us.

As I looked at the boats, I was thankful I wasn’t on one, as I have a weakness to motion sickness. But the boats were built to ride the waves, always staying on top of them no matter which way the sea moved. In a similar way, God has made us to ride on top through the storms in our lives.

Let me encourage you today. Whatever storm you are facing, run to God as your refuge. Put your hope in Him and let Him be the anchor for your soul. Then hold on and enjoy the ride.

Prayer: God, forgive me for the times I have tried to ride the storms in my life on my own rather than running to You for refuge. Today I choose to run to You. Be the anchor for my soul. Let me ride above the storms in my life without fear, because my confidence is in You. Amen.
